Following the experimental event TV Mountain School last summer and the 2015 Spring Exhibition “For Troedsson Villa”, this exhibition will be held in building not far from Toshogu Shrine in the town of Nikko, under the moniker Satellite TV which will function as an untethered exhibition site for Troedsson Villa.
The idea behind a communications satellite is simple: Send data up into space and beam it back down to another spot on the globe. The first live TV transmission between two continents relied on the orbiting satellite called Telstar, about the size of a large beach ball, or a large Noguchi lamp, which could provided a live transmission across the Atlantic ocean for less than twenty minutes before moving out of range. In that short span of time, it compressed two distant locations into one…though only one place could view the footage from the other at a time. The images they chose to relay were large and symbolic, like the statue of liberty and JFK addressing congress, and chosen to convey the momentous scale of collapsing space…whereas now, one may text and image of what they are eating to someone a few blocks away, or even in the same room.
The artists included in this exhibition are all currently based in New York and have been invited to spend time living and working at Troedsson Villa in Nikko this fall and winter. Residing in Nikko separately, but in the same space, some may form similar impressions, but their experiences, filtered through their differing perspectives and practices, will most likely yield completely different results. Similar to satellites, they are individuals in orbit, relaying a signal from their position for the duration of time they are in our range. This inaugural Satellite TV will be located at Testuo’s Garage, which is neither a garage nor a gallery, but a building that once housed a Pharmacy, in the area of Yasukawa-cho, not far from Toshogu Shrine, in Nikko, Japan.
2018 Troedsson Villa Artist in Residents included in this transmission are Uri Aran, Erica Baum, Marc Hundley and Ryan Sullivan. Tam Ochiai and the Shuta Hasunuma will also contribute a live performance on the occasion of the opening on Saturday, November 25th at 6pm.
