ミシシッピ州の八月には、月の半ばごろ、とつぜん秋の前触れのような日がやってくる。暑さが落ちて、大気に満ちる光は、今日の太陽からくるというよりも、古代ギリシアのオリンポス山あたりから差しこんでくる感じになる。この光は一、二日しか続かないが、とにかく私の土地では八月には必ずやってくる. – ウィリアム・フォークナー

この8月、私たちはアーティスト、友人、パフォーマー、詩人、未来の建築家たちを日光に招き、展覧会に集まり参加してもらう、それは8月中に連続して行われるワークショップと重なり溶け合っていくだろう。ワークショップは、４週間前に告知されることもあれば、１時間前のこともあり、観客なしで行われることもあるだろう。

The Pawnbrokers Museumでの本展は、ドローイング、絵画、彫刻、映像、建築、テキストを集め、周囲の町と自然から引き出し、またそこへと差し戻していく。事前に用意された作品もあれば、現地で制作される作品もある。何かがアートであるかどうかは、定かではないかもしれない。

詩人の城戸朱理は言葉と言葉を繋げる、色と色を繋げるように、ダニー・マクドナルドは言葉を繋げるように物と物を組み合わせる。ホイットニー・クラフリンの作品のスタイルは一見ランダムに見える、しかし同じ手先で作られる。Pope.Lは絵画と自然を混ぜるように、キキ・スミスの映像クラゲは自然に近づいていく、映像の終わりがあるとすれば何万年後？

西村知己は、その前後にあった瞬間の気配を写真に収める、窪田美樹の彫刻は、彼女が奥多摩の山でワサビ畑の世話を始める前に作られたものである。伊藤きい柚は自分のノートブックを本に変え、無限の別の可能性を思い描く、ゆうちは詩から建物をつくり、二人は共に、現実と想像の入り混じった構造物を想い起こす。

周りから水の神と呼ばれる森山泰地は、自然へ渡り、また戻ってきたガラクタでインスタレーションを作る、大田黒衣美の緻密な動物の絵は、それらをこの自然界から宙吊りにする。

樋口もこは一世代を経て日光に戻り、自分の絵をこの土地に見せる、マイケル・スミスは8月中旬に日光に向かう。マイクはツアーに参加するのだろうか？赤ちゃんは誕生日を迎えるのだろうか？

トレッドソンヴィラマウンテンスクールと呼ばれているものは学校ではないし、伝統的な意味での教える立場、教わる立場も存在しない、ワークショップ、展覧会、食事会、ハイキング等の活動を通して見出される私たちの違いによって私たちは教わり、教える。それはまた教わる事や教わらない事とは何かについての問いでもある。自然を模して描く代わりに、自然が私たちを描くように、森の中に入って、また出る。体に付いた樹々や動物の匂いは森を出る時に気づき、しばらくすると消え去る。

トレッドソン別邸は、日光でアン・イーストマンによって企画・運営されているアートプロジェクトです。レジデンシープログラムに加え、ワークショップや展覧会も開催しています。 今回の展覧会場であるThe Pawnbroker’s Museumは日光のメイン通りから少し奥に入った元・古道具倉庫で１００年前に使われていた名称をそのまま借用しています。 ご来場の際は、meguriカフェ裏手の駐車場を越えた先にある大きな建物を目印にお越しください。

August in Mississippi there’s a few days somewhere about the middle of the month when suddenly there’s a foretaste of fall, it’s cool, there’s a lambence, a soft, a luminous quality to the light, as though it came not from just today but from back in the old classic times. It might have fauns and satyrs and the gods and—from Greece, from Olympus in it somewhere. It lasts just for a day or two, then it’s gone … the title reminded me of that time, of a luminosity older than our Christian civilization.

This summer we present Light in August, an exhibition that will overlap and dissolve into a series of workshops held continuously through the month. Workshops will sometimes be announced four weeks ahead, sometimes an hour before, possibly they will happen with no audience at all.

The exhibition at The Pawnbrokers Museum gathers together drawings, paintings, sculpture, video, architecture, text, drawn from and into the surrounding town and nature. Some works arrive in advance, others are made on arrival. Some things may or may not be art. 

The poet Shuri Kido connects word to word, as one connects color to color; Danny McDonald combines thing with thing, as one connects word with word. Whitney Claflin’s work’s style appears random at first, yet is made by the same hand. As Pope.L mixes painting with nature, Kiki Smith’s video of jellyfish draws closer to nature itself, if the video has an end, how many tens of thousands of years from now?

Tomomi Nishimura photographs hints of moments that came before and after; Miki Kubota’s sculptures were made before she began tending wasabi fields in the mountains of Okutama. Kiiyu Ito turns her notebook into a book, and imagines infinite alternatives; Yuchi makes buildings from poems, and together they recall structures both real and imagined.

Taichi Moriyama, called the water god by those around him, builds an installation from detritus that has made its way into nature and back; Emi Otaguro’s detailed images of animals suspend them from the natural world.

Moko Higuchi returns to Nikko one generation later to show her paintings; Michael Smith heads to Nikko in mid-August. Will Mike take a tour? Will the baby have a birthday?

What is called the Troedsson Villa Mountain School is not a school, and there are no positions in the traditional sense of those who teach and those who are taught. Through workshops, exhibitions, meals, hikes, and other activities, we learn from and teach one another through the differences that emerge among us. This is also a question of what it means to be taught and what it means not to be taught. Instead of depicting nature by imitating it, we enter the forest and then leave it so that nature may depict us. The scent of trees and animals that clings to the body is noticed when we leave the forest, and after a while it fades away.

Troedsson Villa is an art project organized by Anne Eastman in the town of Nikko. In addition to its residency program, it hosts workshops and exhibitions in various locations around town.

This exhibition is held at The Pawnbroker’s Museum, a former antiques warehouse located just past the parking lot behind Meguri Café on Nikko’s main street. The venue takes its name directly from a flyer printed 100 years ago.
When visiting, please look for the building just beyond the café’s parking lot.
